Placentia move on for a rematch against Mililani for a finals spot

West Zone runner-ups Placentia, California and East Zone Champions Wilmington, North Carolina played on July 29 for an opportunity to play against West Zone Champions Mililani, Hawaii in the semifinals of the Mustang-9 World Series.

Placentia lost its opening game against Mililani and Wilmington suffered a devastating loss against the West Zone Champions the day before, but both teams were hungry for a rematch.

Wilmington began the game hot with two straight singles before Brook Adkins tripled on a line drive which scored two. Maxwell Gonthier proceeded to ground out which drove in Adkins for the team’s third run (3-0).

Placentia had a productive half of the first with back to back singles from Justin Karg and Andrew Green which scored the team’s first run. After a walk and a strikeout from Wilmington pitcher Chase Leonard, Bryan Serna grounded out and scored Placentia’s third run before Kemuel Zhang struck out to end the inning (3-3).

Wilmington managed a single in the top of the second but failed to drive the runner in which allowed Placentia to take the lead in the bottom of the inning.

Darius Selway, who pitched a no-hitter the day before, hit a single to break the tie and Karg earned a walk before Leonard committed an error which drove Selway in. Green singled again to score a run and John Burdge tripled to score another two. Zhang grounded out but Burdge managed to make it home to give Placentia a 9-3 lead.

A single by Adkins added to Wilmington’s score and another single by Gonthier added one more. Green found himself in a bind, allowing multiple baserunners and scored runs but caught an infield popup himself to end the inning with Placentia’s lead intact (9-5).

Placentia kept composure and Selway worked a walk before Kang hit an inside the park home run which scored the two. Tucker Hunnicut then hit a stand up triple which allowed Burdge to send him home on a single before Logan Sylvester struck out to end the inning (12-5).

Green continued to pitch well, allowing no runners in the fourth, striking out Keebler and inducing a ground out and fly out to end the inning.

Wilmington pitcher responded with a quick inning of his own, striking one out and inducing a line out and ground out to end the fourth.

The two pitchers continued to work in the fifth, blanking every hitter they faced which led to the top of the sixth with the score locked in at 12-5. Wilmington needed to score at least seven to tie the game and send it to the bottom of the sixth, but failed to do so, ending the game.

Placentia now face off against Mililani for the second time this tournament for a spot in the championship game on July 30 at 1 p.m.
