Long Beach Stymie Guasave's Comeback Attempt

Long Beach, California held on to their lead for a 7-4 victory over Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico in game seven of the 2019 Mustang-9 World Series.

Guasave was able to take an early lead in the first inning on a Sergio Flores ground out to second base, but Long Beach answered right back scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning on effort plays from both Robert Tuiagamoa and Cameron Powell, who both scored on passed balls.

Mexico tied the game in the top of the third inning on another ground out from Flores, this time to shortstop. This tie was broken by Powell’s effort to score on an error before Jacob Brown drove in another run with his line drive to left field for a 4-2 lead.

Although the Mexico Zone Champions chipped away at the deficit via an Edel Valencia RBI single in the top of the fourth inning, they were not able to produce enough to overcome Long Beach. The Californians added two runs in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of an error and Ivan Ortiz’s ability to steal home. Long Beach added another run in the bottom of the fifth when Powell was able to score on an error to take a 7-3 lead.

Mexico’s comeback attempt was shut down after an error allowed Brayan Armenta to score in the top of the sixth inning.

Cameron Powell led all batters with three hits for Long Beach, while Mexico was led by Leonel Villa and Alan Obeso who each had two hits. Sergio Flores finished with two RBIs on the night, and Michael Vazquez finished his pitching appearance with two strikeouts.

With the loss, Mexico plays the hosts, Walnut, California at 5:00 PM. The winner of that game will have a rematch with Long Beach in the next round at 7:30 PM.
