Day 3 Recap of the Mustang-9 World Series

Semi-final action of the Mustang-9 World Series kicked off in Modesto, CA as teams looked to punch their ticket to the championship game.

Semi #1 : Laredo, TX 11, Vacaville, CA 3


Laredo, TX used a strong first couple innings to power past Vacaville, CA, 11-3.


Laredo’s scoring started off in the first inning when they put up five runs. Three of the runs were scored thanks to the efforts of Leopoldo Fuentes III with an RBI single and Migel Elizondo Jr. with a two RBI double.


Vacaville responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the first on an error. They continued to chip away with a run in the bottom of the second on a fielder’s choice. Their third, and final, run scored in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a fielder’s choice.


Their efforts, however, were thwarted as Laredo’s pitchers shut down their scoring for the rest of the game. Raul Ortega Jr. started for Laredo, allowing two runs on one hit in one and two-thirds innings before he was replaced by Jerry Hennessey. Hennessey went two and one-third innings and allowed just one hit. He struck out two and allowed no runs. The final pitcher for Laredo, Trey Gonzales shut the door on the Vacaville offense, allowing one run on no hits.


Laredo had 12 total hits. Hennessey led the way with a 3-for-4 effort, including three runs scored. Fuentes III and Elizondo Jr. had three RBI each.


For Vacaville, their two hits came from Joseph Rico and Marco Saroyan. Jayven Pierce and Will Walther each had an RBI.


With the win, Laredo, TX will improve to 3-1 and advance to play Placentia, CA later on in the day during Semi #3.


The loss drops Vacaville, CA to 0-4 and eliminates them from title play.

Semi #2 : Bel Passi PONY 1, East Long Beach, CA 6


East Long Beach, CA defeated Bel Passi PONY by a margin of 6-1.


There was no scoring in the first or second inning for either team, but East Long Beach broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third when they put up two runs on a Jaedon Enyeart single, plating Liam Vaivao, and Emilio Aguirre groundout that plated Chase Baltazar. They extended their lead in the fourth when Vaivao singled and scored Jamil Barnett Jr..


Bel Passi responded in the top of the fifth on a Peyton Fromm single that allowed Aiden Winchester to score. East Long Beach responded right back when Aguirre singled and brought in another run.


Alexander Doan started on the mound for East Long Beach and went the full six innings allowing one run on only three hits. He walked one and struck out six.


The three hits for Bel Passi were picked up by Winchester, Fromm, and Carson Gil.


Twelve hits were picked up for East Long Beach, with the most impressive performance coming from Vaivao, who went 2-for-2 with two RBI.


East Long Beach, CA improves to 3-1 and will move on to play Los Mochis, Sinaloa, MX later in the day during Semi #4. 


The loss puts Bel Passi PONY’s final record at 0-4 as they are eliminated from the tournament.

Semi #3 : Placentia, CA 10, Laredo, TX 5


Placentia, CA won against Laredo, TX handedly in Semi-Final #3 by a score of 9-5.


Both teams struck in the first inning as Placentia put up two runs on a Jeremiah Peterson sacrifice fly and Tyler Darosa steal of home. Laredo’s Jerry Hennessey scored their one run on a throwing error.


Placentia extended their lead in the top of the third on two doubles by Jeremiah Peterson and Evan Anguiano. Anguiano’s double scored both Peterson and Darosa. They further extended it in the fourth when Oliver Rojas tripled and Peterson singled. This made the score a comfortable 7-1 in favor of Placentia.


The large lead wasn’t enjoyed for long as Laredo punched back in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs. The inning consisted of two RBI doubles by Alexandro Gonzalez and Leopoldo Fuentes III as well as a ground out that advanced Fuentes III home.


The immediate response by Placentia included three additional runs, one tacked on in the fifth  on a passed ball and two in the sixth on a steal of home and Caleb Nido single.


Placentia finished the game with 12 hits. Anguiano went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a double.


Out of the five hits Laredo had in the game, Alexandro Gonzalez had two of them, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.


The win puts Placentia, CA at 4-0 and in the championship game tomorrow at 6:00pm PST/US. They will face Los Mochis, Sinaloa, MX.


With their loss, Laredo, TX finished 3-2 and was eliminated.

Semi #4 : Los Mochis, Sinaloa, MX 7, East Long Beach, CA 4


Los Mochis, Sinaloa, MX earns their spot in the championship with a 7-4 semi-final win over East Long Beach, CA.


Los Mochis got the scoring started in the first with four runs. They scored on an Eden Lopez RBI single, Irving Fong two RBI double, and passed ball. They further extended their lead in the second on a fielder’s choice.


East Long Beach responded with two runs of their own in the third. The runs came via a Seth Witt single and fielder’s choice. They tacked on two more in the fourth and sixth with a walk and Jaedon Enyeart double.


Lopez had a good performance on the mound for Los Mochis, going five innings with four runs allowed on seven hits. He struck out three while walking two.


Witt finished with the best individual performance for East Long Beach with a 2-for-3 effort. He also added an RBI to that performance.


Lopez shined for the victorious Los Mochis with his bat as well as he had two hits in three at bats with an RBI. Fong and Angel Cuevas led the way with two RBI each.


Los Mochis, Sinaloa, MX’s win puts them at 3-1 and secures their spot in the championship game. They will face Placentia, CA at 6:00pm PST/US to see who takes home the trophy.


The loss ends East Long Beach’s tournament as they finish 3-2.
