Aruba carried steam into the latter half of the second by working a walk and singling to get runners on base. Aruba also capitalized off a botched pickoff attempt, scoring two in the process. Deanu Doran was then hit by a pitch and a passed ball drove Meyers in to score (6-1).
Two straight singles by Manny Aguilar and Zaedik McPhail and an error from Bartholomew drove two more runs in for Walnut in the top of the third. Walnut worked another walk and Cristian Espericueta singled up the middle for Walnut’s fourth run of the game (6-4).
Aruba answered back by widening the gap Walnut managed to bridge, thanks to a single from Nathaniel Riley, which scored two. Another single from Meyers added another run, before he was caught stealing second, which ended the inning (9-4).
Aruba started its half of the fourth inning with a strikeout. A single from Bartholomew, a ground out by Willems and a single from Dyrick Wouters put another run on the board for the Caribbean Zone Champions (11-4).
The Caribbean Zone Representative's relief pitcher Willems tossed 2.1 scoreless innings to lock the game down for Aruba and advance his squad to the semifinals.
Game #10 Placentia, California 12 Wilmington (Winter Park), North Carolina 5
A seven-run second inning gave West Zone Finalist Placentia, California all the runs it needed to defeat and eliminate East Zone Champion Wilmington (Winter Park), North Carolina 12-5. Placentia also ran wild on Wilmington in the game with 19 stolen bases.
Placentia lost its opening game against Mililani, and Wilmington suffered a devastating loss against the West Zone Champions the day before, but both teams were hungry for a rematch.
Wilmington began the game hot with two-straight singles before Brook Adkins tripled on a line drive, which scored two. Maxwell Gonthier proceeded to ground out, which drove in Adkins for the team’s third run (3-0).
Placentia had a productive half of the first with back-to-back singles from Justin Karg and Andrew Green, which scored the team’s first run. After a walk and a strikeout from Wilmington pitcher Chase Leonard, Bryan Serna grounded out and scored Placentia’s second run, before Kemuel Zhang struck out to end the inning (3-2).
The first seven-consecutive Placentia batters to step up to the plate reached base in the second inning. Four hits and three walks, highlighted by Jacob Vasquez's double and John Burdge's triple, allowed Placentia to score six runs. A Zhang RBI groundout gave Placentia an additional run for good measure, as it led 9-3.
A single by Adkins added to Wilmington’s score and another a single by Gonthier added one more (9-5). Green found himself in a bind, but he caught an infield popup to end the inning with Placentia’s lead intact.
Placentia kept its composure. Selway worked a walk, before Kang hit an inside-the-park home run, which scored the two. Tucker Hunnicut then hit a stand-up triple, which allowed Burdge to send him home on a single (12-5).
Green continued to pitch well, allowing no runners in the fourth, striking out Keebler and inducing a ground out and fly out to end the inning. Green finished the game going five innings strong, allowing five runs on six hits and a walk, while striking out three.
Game #11: Tijuana, Mexico 13 Aruba 2 (F/4)
Mexico Zone Champion Tijuana, Baja California continued to roll and had no trouble with Caribbean Zone Representative Aruba in 13-2 win to advance to the Mustang-9 World Series championship game. Mexico led 13-0, before Aruba scored two in the final half inning of the game.
Tijuana got its scoring started in the top of the second, when Rafael Rodriguez doubled, Matthew Delgado singled and shortstop Nishentel Meyers committed an error and Willems threw a wild pitch to score its first three runs. Another wild pitch later and Tijuana quickly led 4-0.
Angel Henriquez continued to work on the mound for Tijuana. He recorded three-straight outs to blank Aruba, before Tijuana singled in three straight at-bats, scoring another run (5-0) during Mexico's turn to bat in the third. A balk by Doran and a single by Nicholas Sanchez drove in three more. Ricardo Aguilar singled on a line drive to center and drove in another three insurance runs. Henriquez got a single and drove in two more runs, adding to Tijuana’s already large lead (13-0).
Aruba found themselves in a bind in the bottom of the fourth, needing to score at least four to avoid the mercy rule Tijuana. The team opened its possible final inning with a double and a walk, scoring two off subsequent fielder’s choices and a single, but they could not score two more.
Aguilar and Rodriguez led Mexico at the plate. Aguilar went 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Rodriguez went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Henriquez finished the game with the win, going four complete innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks, while striking out three.
Game #12: Mililani, Hawaii 5 Placentia, California 4
In arguably the best game of the entire tournament, West Zone Champion Mililani, Hawaii outlasted West Zone Finalist Placentia, California 5-4 in a game that went down to the final inning.
In the top of the sixth with the game tied (4-4), Hoshio Oyama led off the inning with a walk. Oyama stole second base and was balked to third. Joey Katana then sacrifice bunted himself, allowing Oyama to score the go-ahead run. Mililani then went down in order, needing three more outs to advance to the championship game and defeat its rival for the third time in a week.
Deagan Kawahakui closed the game out for the Hawaiians by striking out the side to win the game 5-4.
Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Placentia mounted a comeback. Placentia began their half of the inning with a double and a single by Andrew Green and Tucker Hunnicut, which drove Green home. A groundout by Kemuel Zhang forced an out at first and drove Hunnicut home, cutting Mililani’s lead to one run before the inning ended (4-3).
Vasquez hit a hard ground ball and beat the throw to make it to first before stealing second and then third off a wild pitch, putting the tying run on third without any outs, but a great throw home and a better tag by Trycen Kaimiola punched Vasquez out at the plate. Excellent baserunning by Ty Ayala provided the tying run, as he stole third and then beat the tag at the plate by the skin of his teeth. A fielder’s choice ended the inning, sending the game to the sixth (4-4).
Ryeder Takahashi started on the mound for Mililani and went 4.2 innings strong, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits and two walks, while striking out six. Kawahakui recorded the save. Despite the loss, Hunnicut pitched admirably in relief for Placentia. He replaced starter Bryan Serna, who pitched 3.2 solid innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and four walks, while striking out eight.

Mustang-9 World Series Championship Game: Mililani, Hawaii 10 Tijuana, Mexico 0 (F/5)
In a clash of titans, West Zone Champion Mililani, Hawaii and Mexico Zone Champion Tijuana, Baja California, both undefeated, met in the championship game of the Mustang-9 World Series. Thanks in part to a sensational pitching performance by starter Jonah Brub, Mililani shutout Tijuana 10-0 in five innings.
Brub’s performance was the deciding factor in the game, as he pitched a gem, going five innings and allowing only two hits with six strikeouts. Brub held Mexico’s two best hitters, Ricardo Aguilar and Rafael Rodriguez, hitless on the day.
The final game marked the first time in Mustang-9 World Series history that a non-California team would take home the trophy. Tijuana defeated every opponent by double digits, forcing the mercy rule to end games. Mililani, too, terrorized the bracket with strong showings, fulfilling the inevitability of a final game between the two teams.
A walk to Jonah Parker began the latter half of the second inning and an error by Tijuana’s shortstop allowed Parker to take second. Pitcher Irvings Garcia and Eleu Colburn engaged in a deep battle on a full count, but Garcia won, forcing a flyout to center for the second out. Hoshio Oyama stood in the batter’s box with two on base and worked another full count before Garcia loaded the bases on a walk.
Garcia pitched himself into a jam, which led to Katano reaching base off an error, driving in the first run of the game. Ryeder Takahashi singled to left and drove another run in, pressuring Tijuana into a mound visit early in the game. Another single to right by Kawahakui drove two more in and Tijuana found themselves down 4-0 before Kawahakui was caught stealing second, finally ending the inning.
Mililani once again came through in the clutch with two outs in the third. A walk and a stolen base by Eriz Passi cost Tijuana, when Trycen Kaimiola singled to drive Passi in.
Tijuana was forced to pull Garcia for pitcher Jesus Castro, who immediately gave up a first pitch double to Oyama, which added yet another run (6-0).
Opportunities for a comeback was starting to run out for Tijuana, who had yet to even get a hit against Brub. The spell was finally broken when Matthew Delgado singled to center and took second off a sacrifice bunt from Edgar Rubio. Castro came to bat and struck out, before Castro grounded out to first, killing the brief rally Delgado attempted to start.
Mililani again began strong with a single to left by Passi, which brought Delgado out to pitch, who began with a strikeout. A sacrifice bunt by Kaimiola brought Parker home. A passed ball on a routine groundout sent Kaimiola home for another run. Rubio came in to pitch the one out and the bases loaded, but he hit Takahashi with a pitch and drove yet another run in.
A single by Kawahakui drove the last runner in, giving Mililani a 10-0 lead, ending the game on the mercy rule.
Takahashi paced Mililani with three hits, while Kawahakui led the offense with three RBI.
Mililani’s victory granted the team its first ever Mustang-9 World Series title, the first for the state of Hawaii. Meanwhile, Mexico finishes as the World Series runners-up yet again, after Navajoa, Sonora finished as the 2017 M9WS finalist.

Day 1
July 28, 2017
Following the conclusion of yesterday’s annual opening ceremonies and skills competition, the eight Mustang-9 World Series competing teams were ready to go to work at Creekside Park in sunny Walnut, California. Four winning teams jockeyed their way into the winner’s bracket, while four other teams’ losses set themselves up for elimination games Friday.
The tournament’s first game was a hotly contested pitcher’s duel all evening long, as South Zone Champion Brownsville, Texas defeated Caribbean Zone representative Panama City, Panama 6-5, thanks to its offense striking late at a pivotal time in the game.
Panama took a 5-4 lead in the top of the fifth inning, following Edwin Gomez’s double to center field, which scored Jeyson Ulloa. But the Texans battled back, beginning with a lead off single by Isaac Solis in the bottom of the fifth. Steven Martinez then reached on an error on a pop up to the first baseman, allowing Solis to come around and score to tie the game 5-5. On a 3-2 count, Oliver Olvera recorded the hit of the game for Brownsville, as he knocked a triple to right field, scoring Martinez and giving Texas a 6-5 lead.
Brownsville’s Dylan Rivera, who completed three innings of relief, shut the door down in the top of the sixth, sending Panama’s last three batters back to the bench without a hit, two by way of strikeouts, to win 6-5. Both teams’ pitching staffs were excellent, as the Brownsville duo of Olvera and Rivera combined for 11 strikeouts and allowed just four hits on the night, while the Panama City duo of Geremi Ruiz and Eiden Reyes also combined for 11 strikeouts and allowed just four hits on the night.
With the win, Brownsville advances to face West Zone Champion Los Alamitos, California at 7:30 p.m. PST/US tonight in Game #7. With the loss, Panama City takes on North Zone representative Lexington, Kentucky at 5 p.m. in an elimination Game #5.
Game #2 of the evening was arguably as exciting as Game #1, as Mexico Zone Champion Navajoa, Sonora dueled with Asia-Pacific Zone representative Manila, Philippines to a 4-2 victory.
Team Mexico broke open the scoring in the third inning, when Pablo Rodriguez singled home Johnathan Mariscales from third base. Rodriguez then stole second during the next at-bat and he was cashed in by Rodrigo Agramon on a single to left field to make it 2-0 Navajoa. Angel Tajia then completed the scoring in the inning on a single to left field that scored Agramon.
After Franco Mendoza shut down the Manila offense for the first three innings of the game and Francisco Martinez was cruising through the next 1.2 innings, the Philippines offense showed life in the bottom of the fifth inning when it successfully pulled off a delayed steal play in which Franky Garcia scored to make it 3-1 Mexico, but a ground out ended Manila’s scoring threat.
Navajoa added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning, when Rodriguez came through once again with an RBI single that scored Fausto Barreras from second (4-1 Mexico). The Filipinos had one last chance in the bottom of the sixth, as Ron Roasario began the inning with a single, advanced to second on a balk, and after a strikeout, stole third base. Dustin Gong sacrifice bunted Rosario home to make the score 4-2, but a ground out by Aljun Tapia ended the game, resulting in a Mexico victory.
Rodriguez led the charge for Navajoa at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, while Garcia recorded two of Manila’s three hits on the day and he also scored a run. With the win, Navajoa advances to face Host Walnut, California tonight at 7:30 p.m., while Manila will take on East Zone Champion Chesterfield at 5 p.m. in an elimination game.
In Game #3, Los Alamitos’ bats were red hot and the West Zone Champions defeated North Zone representative Lexington, Kentucky 16-2. Behind an offense that manufactured 11 hits, the California offense witnessed five players record multiple runs scored on the day and three players recorded multi-RBI games. Lead off hitter Noah Johnson also had a home run during the contest.
Los Alamitos’ win advanced the squad to a matchup with South Zone Champion Brownsville at 7:30 p.m. tonight, while Lexington’s loss moves them into the loser’s bracket, awaiting an elimination game with Caribbean Zone representative Panama City at 5 p.m.
In Game #4, fellow California team Walnut mirrored Los Alamitos’ offensive prowess, defeating East Zone Champion Chesterfield, Virginia 15-5 in a shortened, 10-run rule game.
Both teams’ offenses were ready to hit, as they both scored three runs apiece in the first inning. But it was Walnut whose offense continued to carry momentum into the second inning. Four-consecutive singles to lead off the inning by Ethen McNeil, Eduardo Chavez, Adam Lenero and Isaiah Benavidez lead to the score being 6-3 Walnut. Then, the Californians went on a two-out rally. Jonathan Rodriguez was hit by a pitch, and then Jonathan Blacklock was walked. Brandon Walton then hit a single through the left side to score both Rodriguez and Blacklock to make it 8-3 Walnut. Derrick Necke singled to right field during the next at-bat to score Walton. After a bases loaded pop out, Walnut was left with a 9-3 lead.
Chesterfield battled back to score two runs in the top of the third inning by capitalizing on two Walnut errors, but Walnut regained its sizable lead in the bottom of the inning when Benavidez walked, stole second and third and scored on a passed ball (10-5). Then Blacklock singled home Camren Lobo to make it 11-5.
Blacklock came to the mound in relief for the Host team and recorded a one-two-three top of the fourth inning. Walnut added two runs for good measure in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Lenero singled home Brian Borjor, and Lobo singled home Lenero (13-5). Blacklock allowed two Chesterfield runners to get in scoring position, but he got the ground out he needed to escape without an earned run.
With its sights set on a 10-run rule victory, the Walnut offense went to work in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Blacklock led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a passed ball, stole third base, and scored on another passed ball, before Walton knocked a double to centerfield. Walton then stole third during Borjor’s at-bat, and Chavez ended the game with a single to center field, scoring Walton for the win (15-5 by 10-run rule).
Four Walnut players recorded multi-hit games, while four players scored multiple runs during the game. Walton led the team with four RBI on the day to go along with his three hits and two runs scored.
The win moved Walnut ahead in the winner’s bracket to take on Navajoa tonight at 7:30 p.m., while Chesterfield hopes to bounce back and stave off elimination in its game tonight at 5 p.m. against Manila.
Day 2
July 29, 2017
The two California competitors, Host Walnut and West Zone Champion Los Alamitos stole the show Friday night at the Mustang-9 World Series in Walnut, California, as both collected wins to advance to the semifinals. While two other teams' losses dropped them into the loser's bracket, facing elimination tonight.
Panama City, Panama 7 Lexington, Kentucky 3
A Fernando De Leon inside-the-park grand slam in the fourth inning and three shutout innings of relief by pitcher Jeyson Ulloa, led to a 7-3 Panama City victory over Lexington, Kentucky in Game #5 at the Mustang-9 World Series in Walnut, California Friday.

Williams scored an insurance run for the East Zone Champions in the bottom of the fifth, when he scored on a wild pitch, and although Ben Amir was able to get a run back for Manila in the top of the sixth, when Rosario hit a single, it was not enough as Hater shut the door down with a strikeout to end the game (6-4).
Chesterfield's win kept its tournament hopes alive and advanced it into the next round of the loser's bracket against Navajoa, Sonora, Mexico today at 5 p.m., while Manila's loss dropped it into the seventh place consolation game against Lexington, Kentucky today at 2:30 p.m.

A Rivera RBI single in the top of the fifth scored Gamez to give Brownsville six runs, but it was not enough offense, as Los Alamitos added two runs in the bottom of the fifth, when back-to-back RBI singles by Leitner and Easton Shortle scored Slevcove and Leitner, respectively, completing the scoring in the game (13-6).
Los Alamitos' victory advanced the West Zone Champions to the winner's bracket semifinals tonight at 7:30 p.m., while Brownsville's loss moved it to the loser's bracket against Panama City tonight at 5 p.m.

July 30, 2017
Mexico Zone Champion Navajoa, Sonora made the most noise during day three at the Mustang-9 World Series in Walnut, California, as the team stayed alive with a victory over East Zone Champion Chesterfield, Virginia and then it defeated undefeated Host Walnut to force an "if necessary" Game #13 Sunday. Meanwhile, West Zone Champion Los Alamitos, California continued to dominate to advance to the championship game, while two teams had to tell their tournament hopes goodbye.
Brownsville, Texas 14 Panama City, Panama 12
In a wild, high-scoring affair in which both teams recorded eight-run innings, South Zone Champion Brownsville, Texas outlasted Caribbean Zone representative Panama City, Panama Saturday in an elimination Game #9 at the Mustang-9 World Series.
Brownsville started to take control of the game, when it had a 4-0 lead after two and a half innings. But in the bottom of the third, Panama City went on its run, as six walks, three singles and a Brownsville error led to eight runs to give Panama its first lead of the game.
Both teams traded runs in the fourth inning, but it was in the top of the fifth inning when Brownsville really turned the tide. Dylan Rivera led off the inning with a double, stole third and scored on a passed ball during the next at-bat. After two RBI singles by Isaac Solis and Steven Martinez and four Panama City errors, the South Zone champs took back the lead and never looked back. Oliver Olvera later stole home, and Angel De La Fuente and Anthony Gamez both scored on errors, giving Brownsville a 13-9 lead when the inning was all said and done.
But Panama would not concede defeat, when, in the bottom of the fifth, Yoel Rodriguez walked, was sacrifice bunted to second and scored on a Brownsville error. Ameth Reyes later cashed in Fernando De Leon, completing the scoring for the inning, as the Panama deficit shrunk (13-11).
In the top of the sixth, Solis singled, stole second, advanced to third on an error and was balked home, giving Brownsville another run. Panama made one last effort in the bottom of the sixth, as Jose Jimenez led off the inning with a walk, and he was pinch ran for by Manuel Gonzalez. Gonzalez stole second base and came around to score when Juan Perez hit a single to center field and the ball was misplayed by the Brownsville center fielder to make it 14-12 with no outs. But a fly out, pick off to get Perez and a strikeout ended the game.
Solis and Steven Martinez combined to record five of Brownsville's seven hits on the day, and the duo scored seven runs together. There were 17 combined walks and 17 combined errors in the contest.

Two walks loaded the bases, and then back-to-back doubles by Adrian Cardenas and Fausto Barreras quickly made it 4-0 Mexico. A wild pitch during Rodrigo Agramon scored both Cardenas and Barreras, completing the scoring in the inning (6-0).
Navajoa's starting pitcher Mendoza was excellent during the three innings he pitched, as he allowed just two hits and two walks, while striking out seven, but most important, not allowing a run.
Chesterfield finally got on the board in the top of the fourth, when Lance Coleman scored on a passed ball and Mason Talbots scored when Sean Jenkins reached on an error to make it 6-2 Navajoa.
The Mexicans scored five in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by Cardenas' second two-RBI double of the game, and despite allowing two runs over the final four frames, including a Jenkins inside-the-park home run in the sixth inning, the Chesterfield offensive attack was never enough to overtake Navajoa's lead.
Cardenas' four RBI paced Team Mexico, while Mendoza also collected two hits, two runs scored and a RBI.
The win propelled Navajoa into the semifinals to face Host Walnut, while the loss eliminated Chesterfield.
Los Alamitos, California 11 Brownsville, Texas 0

Navajoa started off hot in the top of the first inning, as Jose Duarte led off the game by reaching on third strike wild pitch, he stole second and was cashed in on Emiliano Ibarra's triple to center field. Ibarra scored on the next at-bat to Franco Mendoza on a passed ball, completing the scoring in the inning (2-0 Navajoa). Los Alamitos got a run back in the bottom of the first, when Easton Shortle recorded an RBI ground out that scored Andrew Slevcove.
The West Zone Champions took the lead in the bottom of the second thanks to a few miscues by Mexico. Cruz D'Errico was hit by a pitch and he stole second base. Ryan Hurley reached on an error, advancing D'Errico to third, and D'Errico scored on a Gram Ludwig bunt single. Mexico then made the move to bring in Fausto Barreras, but Hurley would score on a passed ball. Slevcove then grounded out, scoring Ludwig. Noah Johnson, who walked earlier in the inning scored on another passed ball to complete the scoring for the inning (5-2 Los Alamitos).
But the Mexico Zone Champions battled right back in the top of the third, cutting the deficit to just a run. Duarte reached base on a fielder's choice and later scored on Mendoza's double to left field. Jonathan Mariscales hit a blooper to left to score Mendoza, but Navajoa could not add on further (5-4 Los Alamitos).
The momentum pendulum swung in Los Alamitos' favor in the bottom of the fourth, ultimately changing the complexion of the game. Johnson started the rally with a RBI single, which scored Hurley. After a pop out, the inning looked lost, but Wyatt Leitner rose to the occasion with a double, which scored Johnson, and then Shortle doubled home Leitner to make it 8-4 Los Alamitos. Nicholas Galluccio singled and stole second. Then, pinch hitter John Shelley slammed a line drive double to left field to score both Shortle and Gallucio (10-4 Los Alamitos).
Navajoa had a chance to retaliate, when it had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the fifth, but Barreras hit into a double play, which ended the scoring threat. Los Alamitos picked up two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth, when Ludwig recorded a two-RBI double, which scored D'Errico and Hurley (12-4 Los Alamitos).
Mexico made one last effort to make a comeback when it scored two in the top of the sixth off back-to-back RBI singles by Ibarra and Mendoza, but another double play ended the inning and the game by the final score of 12-6.
Four Los Alamitos players recorded two hits in the contest. Three players scored multiple runs and collected multiple RBI. For Navajoa, the two, three and four hitters did the most damage during the afternoon, as Ibarra, Mendoza and Mariscales garnered eight of the teams 10 hits. The trio also recorded five RBI and two runs scored.
Los Alamitos' Brady McKay was awarded the tournament's Batting Champion award. Over the four-day tournament, McKay led the Mustang-9 World Series with a .667 batting average.
The 2017 title marks Los Alamitos' first Mustang-9 World Series championship. It is the state of California's fourth-consecutive title since the tournament was established in 2014.
